Enterprise Server Buying Guide
How to scope CPU, memory, storage, and networking for your next rack of servers. · 9 min read
Start with workload, not specs
Whether you're standing up a virtualization cluster, a database tier, or a small AI inference rig, define your workload's CPU/memory/IO profile before picking a chassis.
Memory drives everything
Modern VM and container density is bottlenecked by DRAM. Spec at least 16 GB per logical core for general virtualization.
Storage tiering
NVMe for transactional workloads, SAS SSD for warm storage, SATA / HDD for cold backup. Mixing tiers in a single chassis is normal.
Networking
10/25 GbE is now baseline. Plan dual NICs and dual switches for any production tier.
